3rd Grade Science

April 9th, 2019

This week in science instead of doing some experiments with forces and balance we experimented with magnets. Magnets are such a great way to really feel the pull and push that we have been discussing in relation to forces.

Being the week before a vacation.... expectations sometimes need to be adjusted. Since the 3rd graders showed such enthusiasm for animals during the animals through time unit that we started the year with I decided to teach them about one of our local experts. Ben Kilham is a Lyme resident and is an expert on black bears. I've interviewed him and been to his house where he raises black bear cubs. Today we started watching Bear Man which is a documentary on Kilham and what he does. We will finish this video tomorrow during science!

This week in science we continued our unit on forces. We have learned that a force can either pull or push and some can even do both. Next week we will continue with this unit and add in how forces can affect balance.

In science this week we are learning about weather on the website www.Weatherwizkids.com. Partners can pick which topic they want to learn more about. Then they are teaching what they are learning to the rest of the class. Some students are teaching their topic to the class as a play, some are reading their answers, some are using pictures to teach the class. We are going to finish this next week!

We have started the year off learning how to be a scientist! Students have learned that scientists.....
-Don't give up
-Are curious
-Ask questions
-Wonder about things
-Observe details
and so much more

Science this time of year is so much fun! There is so much changing in our world around us! Okay, science any time of year is fun! We are so lucky to live in such an amazingly beautiful place and it's been so much fun teaching the 3rd graders about why plants give us fruit, why some apples are green and some are red, and how selection works so you can grow the biggest pumpkin around! Here is a link to an activity that we are doing Tuesday and Wednesday to learn about selection! Feel free to watch it and ask you student about it when they come home from school Wednesday!

Stay Curious!
